The Erasmus programme is the European Programme that deals with Higher Education area. Its aims are the improvement of the quality in education and the strengthening of its European dimension by the encouraging international cooperation, mainly between the Higher Education institutions.

The main objective of the Programme is to support the creation of a united European area of higher education, where there is transparency and compatibility between the formal qualifications that are gained by Higher Education in Europe.

The Erasmus programme offers the opportunity of mobility to students, teachers and other staff through bilateral agreements between cooperating Universities and Higher Education Institutions, as well as organizations/ enterprises in 33 countries participating in the programme. These countries are the 27 countries members of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Switzerland, as well as the countries under integration, Croatia and Turkey.

It is essential that the Universities and Institutions that participate have obtained the Erasmus University Charter. From the academic year 2011-12, 20 Cypriot public and private Universities and Higher Education Institutions have the right to participate in the Programme.
